Fasting and spiritual discipline

We’re always rushing, always consuming. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about fasting, not just as a diet thing, but as a spiritual practice. It’s truly eye-opening and offers a unique perspective.

Creating Space

For me, it’s about deliberately creating space. When we choose to forgo something, even for a short time, it really shifts our focus. It’s a way of saying, “Okay, God, I’m setting aside this comfort or distraction to pay more attention to You.” It helps clear out the noise in our heads and hearts, allowing for greater clarity.

It’s not about earning anything, but more about humbling ourselves and sharpening our spiritual senses. The Bible puts it beautifully in Matthew 6:17-18, “But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” It reminds us it’s a personal journey with God, fostering intimacy.

When we deny ourselves, even small things, it reminds us where our true sustenance comes from. It builds discipline, sure, but more importantly, it helps us realise our dependency on something bigger than ourselves. It really changes your perspective on what truly nourishes you and provides lasting fulfilment.

Hope this thought helps you too.
