Recognising our own pride is often the first, hardest step towards real growth. It’s tricky because our ego always tries to shield us, making it tough to admit when we’re wrong or when we don’t know something. I’ve certainly felt the sting of holding onto a wrong idea just because I didn’t want to look foolish. That need to be ‘right’ can really stop us from learning and connecting with others honestly.
Finding Freedom in Humility
The Bible gives us a pretty clear warning about this behaviour. James 4:6 tells us, ‘God opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble.’ It’s a powerful reminder that true strength isn’t about always being on top or having all the answers. Instead, it’s about having the courage to be vulnerable, to ask for help, and to celebrate others without feeling diminished. When we let go of that grip of pride, it’s like a huge weight lifts, allowing for much deeper relationships and genuine self-improvement. It’s a daily practice, learning to value humility over ego.
