Thomas and doubt

Thomas’s story often makes us feel a bit uncomfortable because it holds a mirror up to our own moments of uncertainty. We sometimes label him “Doubting Thomas,” but perhaps he was just being human, needing tangible proof when everything felt impossible. It’s a natural reaction when life throws us a curveball.

His honest desire to see and touch the resurrected Christ wasn’t met with condemnation, but with incredible understanding. Jesus didn’t scold him; He simply offered the very evidence Thomas sought. This beautiful act shows us that it’s okay to bring our genuine questions and our raw disbelief to the divine.

Believing Beyond Sight

What stands out is Jesus’s gentle declaration after Thomas believed: “Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.'” This isn’t a criticism, but an invitation to a deeper kind of faith. It’s about trusting even when the evidence isn’t right in front of our eyes. As C.S. Lewis once wrote, “Faith…is the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted, in spite of your changing moods.” Our own faith journey, like Thomas’s, often involves moving from needing to see to simply choosing to believe.
