Esther and courage

Esther and courage

Esther’s story really shines a light on what true courage looks like, especially when facing something utterly terrifying. She was a young woman, orphaned and then queen, suddenly tasked with saving her entire people from annihilation. The weight of that responsibility must have been immense, a burden few of us could ever imagine carrying.

Esther’s Brave Stand

She knew approaching King Xerxes without being summoned could mean instant death. Yet, Mordecai’s words, “Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14), sparked something within her. It wasn’t reckless abandon, but a deeply considered, prayerful decision to act despite fear. Her plan involved fasting and the support of her people, demonstrating a reliance on divine strength rather than her own. Her powerful resolve crystallised in her declaration: “I will go to the king, though it is against the law; and if I perish, I perish.” (Esther 4:16).

That kind of selfless bravery is incredibly inspiring. It helps us realise that courage isn’t the absence of fear, but rather acting in the face of it for a greater purpose. We might not face kings and edicts, but we all have moments requiring us to speak up or step out when it feels scary. Esther shows us that with a bit of faith and a lot of heart, we can find that inner strength.

It’s like C.S. Lewis once wrote, “Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point.” Esther certainly met her testing point with remarkable grace and fortitude.
