Elijah and burnout

Elijah and burnout

Even after a huge spiritual victory, Elijah found himself utterly spent and wanting to give up. This mighty prophet, fresh from Mount Carmel, collapsed under a broom tree, asking God to take his life. It’s a stark reminder that even the strongest among us can experience profound exhaustion and despair. Burnout isn’t just a modern phenomenon; it’s a deeply human experience.

God’s response to Elijah wasn’t a lecture or a call to action. Instead, He provided practical care: sleep, food, and gentle presence. An angel woke Elijah, saying, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you” (1 Kings 19:7). He then slept again, ate, and found strength for the path ahead. This wasn’t about pushing harder; it was about resting deeply and being nourished.

Understanding Our Limits

Realising our limits is not a failure, it’s wisdom. We sometimes believe we must keep pushing, ignoring the signs our bodies and minds give us. But God modelled for Elijah, and for us, the importance of slowing down and allowing ourselves to be cared for. Taking genuine rest isn’t being lazy; it’s essential for our soul’s wellbeing. Honouring our need for restoration is a powerful act of faith, trusting that God sustains us even when we pause. We can learn to listen to our own needs before we reach breaking point.
