In Psalm 142, the brave David is fleeing from King Saul and hiding in a cave. David was on the run, pursued by Saul, who sought to kill him out of jealousy and fear of David’s growing popularity. In this psalm, David pours out his heart to God, pleading for His protection. He feels isolated, desperate, and in need of deliverance. In his deepest prayer, as we read in verse 5, he says:

“I cry to you, Lord;
I say, ‘You are my refuge,
my portion in the land of the living.’”

In other words, David is saying, “In life, I desire only You, Lord.” Who do we turn to when the enemy is attacking from every side? Do we retreat to our cave and let God act on our behalf, as David did? David realized that only God could rescue him from his enemies. He turned to God humbly, trusting in His timing and will. Even though David had multiple opportunities to kill King Saul, he chose to leave Saul’s fate in God’s hands rather than taking matters into his own. Often, we try to handle things ourselves, but placing our trust in God’s powerful hands is the best remedy for our broken world.

Our God is stronger than any enemy. He will rescue us from every captivity. We are His sons and daughters, and He will never abandon us. All we need to do is humbly call upon His Name, as David did. Just as God promoted David to be king, He will elevate us, lifting our heads high and placing us where He wants us to be. You and I are safe in Jesus’ arms, experiencing an outpouring of peace beyond measure.

Let us pray that we desire only the Lord in every aspect of our lives.

Prayer:
God, in life, I desire You alone as my Lord and Savior. I turn to You in all circumstances, just as David did. Hear my prayer today, and guide me on the path You have for me. Remove anything that is not from You and give me a heart of flesh to desire You more and more. I thank and praise You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen
