The Christmas tree brings back beautiful memories for me and for you too. My memory is mesmerised by it. The smell of a fresh pine tree gave us the green light for the gifts underneath it! Haha! Receiving gifts as a kid, what kid would ever say no? When Santa secretly left the presents under the tree, Christmas morning became the moment of truth: who got what?! It all depended on whether Santa was on a budget or whether it was a year of abundance, translated to us by our parents. Some years brought great gifts, some years more modest ones. Haha!
Oh, don’t tell me, the Christmas lights as kids were like seeing new iPhones hanging on the tree. All the colours made it even more remarkable.
All those beautiful memories truly feel good, don’t they? As we slowly (hopefully very slow 😄) grew up , we realised Santa wasn’t real, or was he? It all depended on the family budget and many other things. But one thing was never taken away. They were all symbolic of a deeper truth. The Light of the world came into the world so that people could see, and darkness would lose its meaning in our lives.
It was all about the Light. His name is Jesus.
Darkness cannot remove darkness. Only light can. When I went into the glowworm cave, where you couldn’t see anything except the tiny lights from the glowworms, darkness lost its power. Those little creatures created something breathtaking, like thousands of stars in the sky. Jesus came into our dark world to make it beautiful. Our brokenness loses its meaning, and suddenly the focus shifts to beauty rather than ugliness. That is the purpose of light, to make things beautiful and visible.
If you want your world to become light, invite Jesus in. The best time to bring light into our world is now.
On the first day, we spoke about our great travelling companion. Now you can carry this light within you and shine wherever you go, to the people you know, to the people you don’t know, to the places you’ve been, and to the places you haven’t yet been. God wants you to be a source of light, like a candle glowing in complete darkness. You can be a star, joining other stars, to make a huge difference.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Matthew 5:14
You are seen and valued. You are loved and precious, because you are the light of the world. Just as those little stars shine, just as those lights in the cave shine, you are an overcomer. Jesus came and shone over our lives. Now we do the same. Who knows? You may be the light in someone’s darkness.
Hold on to this light and do not let it go. He will guide you and teach you about the things to come. And next Christmas, you’ll shine even brighter than the last one.
Let’s rejoice and celebrate this Christmas. God’s given light is here and now within us forever.
What a beautiful truth.
