Last night’s movie made me think about how great God is and how selfish humans can be. It was a real-life story based on a book, and here is a brief explanation from Wikipedia:
“In 1874, Will Andrews, the naïve and idealistic son of a pastor, has dropped out of Harvard and traveled to Butcher’s Crossing, a tiny frontier town in Kansas built on the buffalo hide trade.”
The Butcher’s Crossing film made me wonder. It made me think that even in the midst of misery, God’s beauty and love still shine. We humans create our own paths, often muddied by our terms and conditions.
God is above all stories; He creates them. He is the director of our lives. We have nothing to offer Him that truly reflects who He is. Will, who left his university, wanted to experience a buffalo hunt as an educated city boy. Perhaps he achieved his goal, but at the end of the movie, when someone asked him if it was worth it, he replied, “I have seen what I needed to see.”
Sometimes God blesses us abundantly and shows us the right way to go, but we often leave His blessings to experience what we think we need to see. When He calls us for a mission, He equips and empowers us to achieve what needs to be done for His glory.
A section of the movie captured my attention more than others. In the midst of our journey to understand the world, we pause and shout, “This is God” and “This is what I wanted to see.” God’s beauty captures our attention and takes us away from our world to His.
We’re not called to be friends of the world; we are called to be in the world, showing that we are friends of God and belong to heaven’s tribe.
I love what the psalmist says in Psalms 90:2: “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”
This is what I want to see—God’s greatest glory in my life. This is God, my friend; this is God.
